Pani means hand and Grahan means to hold. In the Pani-Grahan ritual, the groom takes the bride's hand, symbolizing his lifelong responsibility to support and care for her.
This ceremony includes several important rituals such as worship of deities, Varaṇa, Kanyadaan (giving away the bride), Godaan, Havan (sacred fire ritual), Lajahom, Shilarohan, Saptapadi, viewing the Sun and Dhruva Star, Heart-Touch Ceremony, Pheras, and the vows exchanged by the bride and groom.
Varaṇa
Recitation of family lineage (gotra) and names of ancestors from both the bride's and groom's families. The bride's parents tie the sacred knot (Gathbandhan).
Worship and Rituals
Lajahom, Shilarohan, and Saptapadi are among the most significant rituals of a Hindu wedding. Through these ceremonies, the bride and groom make sacred promises to one another in the presence of the sacred fire, parents, priests, and family members.
These vows serve as guiding principles for a successful married life.
Laja is the Sanskrit word for puffed rice. During the wedding ceremony, offerings of puffed rice are made into the sacred fire while the bride and groom walk around it.
The bride's brother places puffed rice into her hands. Standing on a stone (Shilarohan), the bride offers it into the fire.
Meaning of Lajahom
A rice plant does not produce grain if it remains where it was first sown. It must be transplanted to another field to grow and flourish. Similarly, the bride moves from her parents' family to her husband's family, where she is expected to build a prosperous and happy life.
The bride's brother symbolically expresses his love and support, assuring her that she will always have the affection and assistance of her family.
In Shilarohan, the bride places her foot on a stone.
Meaning of Shilarohan
The stone represents strength and firmness. The bride and groom are reminded to remain steadfast in their vows and commitments.
Just as a stone remains unbroken while softer objects may break against it, the couple resolves to remain strong in the face of life's challenges and difficulties.
After Lajahom and Shilarohan, the bride and groom take seven steps together around the sacred fire. This is known as Saptapadi.
With each step, they make a promise to each other.
According to tradition, couples who sincerely follow these vows enjoy lasting happiness and prosperity.
The Seven Promises
First Step We will progress together in life with wisdom and self-control, balancing desires with good judgment.
Second Step We will strengthen our bodies, minds, intellect, families, and society.
Third Step We will work together to increase prosperity, knowledge, and resources.
Fourth Step We will use wealth and success for happiness, well-being, and righteous purposes.
Fifth Step We will uphold the honor, values, traditions, and culture of our family and ancestors.
Sixth Step We will contribute to a clean, healthy, and harmonious society and environment.
Seventh Step We will maintain and strengthen respect, love, cooperation, and unity within our family.
After viewing the Sun, the bride and groom touch each other's hearts and recite the following mantra:
Salok
ओम् मम व्रते ते हृदयं दधामि मम चित्तमनुचितं ते अस्तु ।
मम वाचमेकमना जुषस्व प्रजापतिस्त्वा नियुनयक्तु मह्यम् ॥
Meaning
"I place your heart within my heart. May your thoughts remain in harmony with mine. May you listen to my words with attention. Through this sacred bond, you have become my life partner."
The bride similarly expresses:
"I place your heart, soul, and inner being within my heart. May our thoughts remain united. May we listen to and understand one another. Through this sacred bond, we are joined together in life."
The Heart-Touch Ceremony is often described as the symbolic registration of marriage in Indian tradition.
Just as legal registration requires written agreements, witnesses, and signatures, the wedding ceremony takes place before family, priests, and society as witnesses. The hearts of the bride and groom become the symbolic document upon which the commitments of marriage are recorded.
The bride asks the groom to accept the following commitments:
The groom accepts these vows.
The groom asks the bride to:
